The aim of the paper is to propose a model of Organizational Memory Systems (OMS) to a center of research and development (R & D) based on four components: social, cultural, technological, and process for a Higher Education Institution (HEI) in Ecuador. The HEIs are organizations where research is one of its key activities which require adequate knowledge management. An inductive research method based on interviews with teachers was used to know the activities and processes involved in the development of such projects. OMS help to preserve knowledge for use in current and future activities. One of the problems encountered is that it is neither preserving nor sharing the knowledge that people have as a result of experiences, practices, attitudes, among other things, related to projects. Furthermore, the resulting model was implemented in a system based on free software and web technologies system. The implementation of this pattern results in a high level of acceptance by managers and researchers in the R & D centers.
